Why We Love Bamboo – Earth Week Spotlight
  by Jenny South

It’s Earth week, so we thought what better than to share with you all the amazing benefits of bamboo and why we choose it as our champion ingredient for our wonderful slings.

We chose bamboo not only for its eco credentials but also for its amazing properties which we think suit newborns and babies over any other fabric. It’s literally like it was made for our tiny humans. We’ll get more into that later.

At Hana Baby, we’re committed to making conscious choices that benefit not only your baby but the planet too. That’s why we’ve chosen bamboo as the hero fabric in our baby wraps, swaddles, and blankets.

First lets look at bamboo’s as a sustainable choice, and what makes bamboo such a superior material, especially when considering its impact on the planet?

Just like how our newborns turn from tiny to toddlers in the blink of an eye bamboo’s growth is equally as quick. Well actually its a lot quicker. Bamboo can grow up to 3 feet in a single day. Meaning it can be harvested at a much quicker rate than other materials and in greater quantities.

When bamboo is cut, it continues to grow from its root system, meaning that the plant doesn't need to be replanted after harvesting. This ensures a continuous and sustainable supply without the need for replanting. This means it’s less impactful on the soil and the bacteria in the soil levels.

Another reason we chose bamboo is because it needs a lot less water than other plants to grow. The process of growing bamboo is much more sustainable than that of other raw materials.

Bamboo also doesn’t need pesticides or chemical fertilisers, unlike other crops. Bamboo is naturally resists pests and disease, making it easier to cultivate without the need for harmful chemicals. As a result, bamboo farms often require fewer inputs, which means they are much gentler on the environment than traditional farming or forestry practices.

Moreover, bamboo helps to improve soil quality. Its dense root system prevents soil erosion and helps to enrich the soil. This makes bamboo a powerful tool in land restoration efforts, helping to rejuvenate degraded lands.

Like all plants, bamboo absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere during photosynthesis. However, bamboo’s rapid growth allows it to sequester carbon at an impressively high rate.

Studies have shown that bamboo forests can absorb up to 30% more CO2 than hardwood trees. This makes bamboo an effective tool for carbon capture, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change. Bamboo can also release 35% more oxygen into the atmosphere compared to similar-sized trees, further contributing to a healthier environment.

Whilst some of that carbon is released when the bamboo is harvested, especially if the bamboo is left to rot or burnt. However it the bamboo is processed into a material. Wether thats furniture, construction material, or fabric then the carbon will remain locked away in those products for the life time of the products.

Our Bamboo comes from china and is ethically sourced. Carbon can also be released during the manufacturing process of turning the bamboo into fabric.

But I’m pleased to report that our fabric is made according to the OEKOTEX®️ standards and no harmful chemicals are used in the process.

Now that we’ve given you its eco credentials, let us share why we chose it for your baby.

We believe bamboo is made for little humans, here’s why:

1.Breathable & Lightweight

Bamboo’s breathable nature means your baby stays cool and comfy while being snuggled close. It also prevents overheating, especially during warm weather or prolonged wear. It’s breathable, lightweight and ever so soft. This makes it a wonderful material to be next to your babies skin. We wanted a fabric that would stretch to make your baby feel secure and like they were being cradled.

2. Soft as a Cloud

Bamboo fabric is buttery-soft and gentle on sensitive skin, making it ideal for newborns. No irritation, no itching, just pure comfort for your baby and for you.

We wanted a fabric that didn’t make you feel smothered. We wanted it to be as lightweight as possible, just like you were wearing a t-shirt. Something you would feel comfortable wearing for long periods of time, even all day.

3. Thermoregulating

This fabric is like a smart thermostat, it keeps your baby warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot. It also wicks away moisture to keep both you and baby dry. Want to learn more about how bamboo works in colder months? Check out our blog: Embracing the Chill.

4. Natural UV Protection

Bamboo has built-in UV resistance, which helps protect your baby’s delicate skin from harmful sun exposure. It’s a subtle layer of added care for those sunny strolls.

Speaking of warm weather, bamboo has a natural UV filter. Protecting babies delicate skin from the sun was a win win for us when selecting it as our fabric of choice for or Hana Baby Slings.

5. Naturally Antibacterial

The last and probably most important reason we decided on bamboo was because of its anti bacteria properties. We all know babies are so susceptible to germs that having a fabric that would help keep nasty germs away from your precious little one’s really was a no brainer for us.

Real-Life Comfort for Real-Life Parents

We didn’t just want a fabric that looked good or ticked the eco-boxes. We wanted something you’d love to wear. Our bamboo wraps and carriers are designed to feel like your favourite T-shirt, soft, flexible, and wearable all day long. Because when you’re carrying your baby, comfort matters, for both of you.
